West Wittering, West Sussex, Coastal Garden Landscape Design
Set against the sweeping skies and salt-laden breezes of West Wittering, this coastal garden by South Downs Gardens responds directly to its exposed maritime climate and open countryside backdrop. Designed to ground a weatherboarded coastal home within its environment, the landscape bridges the threshold between refined outdoor living and the wild, textured flora of the Hampshire coast.
Spatial Concept & Hard Landscaping
The layout organizes the site into interconnected zones that blend the garden with the surrounding terrain, preserving views across adjacent fields and saltmarshes. Tactile, local materials are selected to age gracefully within the saline environment.
A warm flagstone path connects the grey weatherboard residence to an open lawn and dining terrace. Beyond, raised timber boardwalks wind through matrix planting toward Adirondack seating and a play structure. Perimeter post-and-wire fencing maintains vistas, while woven wattle screens provide privacy and wind shelter along boundaries.
Soft Landscaping & Planting Palette
Thriving in exposed, free-draining coastal soils, the soft landscaping features wind-resilient grasses, architectural shrubs, and drought-tolerant perennials. Windswept pine trees anchor the design, complemented by bold Melianthus, silver Artemisia, and swaying grasses (Calamagrostis, Pennisetum, Stipa). Late-season perennials including Salvia, Perovskia, and Echinacea supply rich color and vital pollinator forage.
Layered plant heights buffer harsh coastal winds while maintaining an open atmosphere. Standing winter seed pods and golden grasses provide vital habitat for overwintering birds, creating an inviting family sanctuary and ecological refuge.
